The Lighthouse is an HIV and AIDS clinic based in Lilongwe, Malawi at Kamuzu Central Hospital. The Lighthouse offers a Continuum of Care to its clients, caring for them from initial testing, through periods of illness, through to palliative care at the end of life.

BACKGROUND

  • Lighthouse was started by staff at Lilongwe Central Hospital (LCH) in 1997, who volunteered their spare time to try to meet the need for care in their communties
  • Full time staff were assigned to train and support Home Based Care (HBC) by LCH in 1998
  • Voluntary Counseling and Testing services became part of the Lighthouse in 1999, and a Clinic at Bottom Hospital, specialising in care for HIV/AIDS, was added in 2000.
  • The Lighthouse Centre opened in 2002, providing integrated care for HIV/AIDS, and a home for the three arms of Lighthouse
  • Free ARVs became available at Lighthouse in June 2004
  • The Lighthouse Training Centre opened in 2005
  • Lighthouse is now a Malawi registered Trust, working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Population, but maintaining its own funds through donations.
